Espèces en voie d’illumination at the Jardin des Plantes

The dark nights of December stir up deep feelings and desires for illuminations, fairy lights, and roaring fires. We want to embrace the winter and the festive season, but see no reason why we need to do so in the dark. The right lights in the right setting can transform a familiar landscape into something beautiful. A light festival can bring the magic of the season to a city and spark the imagination of all those that flock to see it. The Espèces en voie d'illumination is one such event. This light festival is the first of its kind and promises to enthrall visitors throughout the holiday season.
This winter, the Jardin des Plantes will be the host to a series of incredible light statues in the shapes of animals. The idea is that families can wander through the park at their own pace and make great discoveries – a little like an illuminated safari. This animal theme is a big part of the event. In addition to all those beautiful sculptures and lanterns, families can learn more about different species. The menagerie provides a great opportunity to mix the artistic animals with real creatures. There are also environmental workshops for a little more education on the subject.
This is an event with many different layers. Some families will head on down in the early evening and simply marvel at the shapes and lights with their young children. Those with older children will enjoy the chance to get a little more hands-on and help to spread the environmental message. The other great thing about this festival is that the sculptures are on show between 6 pm and 10:45 pm all the way until January 15th. This means plenty of time for repeat visits during these dark winter months. This event is one not to be missed so wrap up warm and go savour the sights.
